CWEA Collection Systems Maintenance Practice Test

Using an approved pesticide to spray manholes is an effective way to manage rodent and insect problems because it directly targets the pests that can infest these areas. Pesticides are designed to eliminate or minimize pest populations quickly and are often formulated to address specific types of insects and rodents that might be common in manhole environments, such as cockroaches or rats.

In addition to their immediate effectiveness, approved pesticides are typically regulated and assessed for safety, ensuring that their use complies with local health and environmental standards. The use of these products can be part of a broader Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy, which includes monitoring and controlling pest populations with various methods.

While natural repellents, better sealing techniques, and keeping dumpsters closed can contribute to pest management strategies, they may not provide the rapid or comprehensive control needed in a collection system maintenance context. For instance, sealing techniques can reduce access, but they may not eliminate an existing problem. Similarly, while keeping dumpsters closed helps prevent attracting pests, it does not address infestations that already exist in manholes. Thus, employing an approved pesticide directly addresses the issue at hand and is a more immediate approach to managing pest problems in these facilities.
